Prof. Dr. Norbert Frei (Jena)

Norbert Frei is Professor of Modern History at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena and Director of the Jena Center 20th Century History. From 1979 to 1997, he was a Reseach Associate at the Institut für Zeitgeschichte in Munich and from 1997 to 2004, he held the Chair of Modern History at Ruhr University Bochum. He is a full member of the Sächsische Akademie der Wissenschaften zu Leipzig. Since 2016, he has been a monthly columnist for Süddeutsche Zeitung. Among his many books are Der Führerstaat. Nationalsozialistische Herrschaft 1933 bis 1945 (1987, 2013), which was translated into several languages, and Vergangenheitspolitik. Die Anfänge der Bundesrepublik und die NS-Vergangenheit (1996, 2012), published in English translation in 2002.
